BITS Pilani to Establish AI Plus Campus in Amaravati
₹1,000 Crore Investment, Admissions from 2027, Capacity for 7,000 Students

In a significant move for higher education and tech innovation in India, BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) is set to launch an AI Plus Campus in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. Chancellor and industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla announced this initiative, emphasizing a futuristic education model centered around Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Robotics, Computational Linguistics, and Cyber-Physical Systems.

The AI-focused campus will be developed in two phases with smart and sustainable infrastructure, ultimately accommodating around 7,000 students. Admissions are expected to begin by 2027.

Speaking at Pilani on Sunday, Kumar Mangalam Birla said,

“We are investing ₹1,000 crore in Amaravati over the next five years. Under Project VISTAAR, we are allocating ₹1,200 crore for the expansion of our Pilani, Hyderabad, and Goa campuses. Our total student strength will increase to 26,000 by 2030-31.”

Visionary Support from Andhra Pradesh Government

Birla stated that the campus in Amaravati aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who facilitated the land allotment at minimal cost. “This campus will reflect his foresight. Construction has already begun. We’re in the final phase of selecting the architectural design, which will be based on green building practices and renewable energy systems,” he added.

The Amaravati campus will be developed as a digital-first campus powered by IoT and AI-enabled services, unlike anything seen in India before. It aims to become a national model for cutting-edge education and interdisciplinary learning. The institute plans to collaborate with industry and global partners to focus on AI and emerging technologies, preparing India’s next-gen talent for the global stage.

Courses in Generative AI, Smart Cities & AI for Healthcare

The undergraduate and training programs will include specialized courses in Generative AI, Smart Cities, AI for Healthcare, among others. The curriculum is being designed to offer a hybrid education model—two years in Amaravati and two years in foreign partner universities, including options for joint Ph.D. programs.

Amaravati to Host India’s First Dedicated AI Campus

Vice-Chancellor V. Ramgopal Rao said,

“Amaravati will be India’s first dedicated AI campus. All major computer science and AI programs will be offered, along with a variety of minor programs. We are designing curricula that span across sectors—agriculture, climate, healthcare—and planning global university partnerships to support these initiatives.”

Campus Location near Seed Access Road

The CRDA (Capital Region Development Authority) has allotted 70 acres of land for the BITS Amaravati campus. The Andhra Pradesh Government has proposed allotting 50–100 acres among various universities. BITS specifically requested land near the Venkateswara Swamy Temple beside the Seed Access Road, expressing interest in designing buildings in temple architectural style. The government has agreed and allocated land accordingly. A recent meeting with CM Chandrababu Naidu included a review of the campus master plan and architectural models.
